What is the compatibility of J1939 to OBD2 cable

The compatibility of J1939 to OBD2 cable is affected by various factors, as follows:

At the protocol level

Partial functional compatibility: J1939 is mainly used for communication between electronic components of large vehicles such as commercial vehicles, while OBD2 is a widely used on-board automatic diagnostic system for passenger cars. The J1939 to OBD2 cable can convert J1939 protocol data into a format that can be recognized by the OBD2 protocol based on protocol conversion technology, enabling universal OBD2 diagnostic equipment to perform basic fault diagnosis and other operations on commercial vehicles that originally only supported J1939 communication.

Special function limitations: The J1939 protocol has its own unique diagnostic functions and dedicated data, such as specific programming or deep fault diagnosis modes for certain commercial vehicle engine management systems. The OBD2 protocol has its standard specifications and functional limitations, and it may not be possible to accurately convert all special functions of J1939 and implement them on OBD2 devices through conversion cables.

Vehicle system level

Power system diagnosis is basically available: For commercial vehicle power systems mainly based on J1939 protocol, such as engine, transmission and other related ECUs, J1939 to OBD2 cables can usually achieve good compatibility. The relevant data and fault information of these ECUs can be converted and provided to OBD2 diagnostic equipment for reading.

Non power system diagnosis is limited: Some vehicles have multiple complex subsystems, and in addition to the power system, body control, safety, entertainment, and other systems may use other protocols or have poor compatibility with OBD2. The J1939 to OBD2 cable may not be able to directly access these non J1939 protocols or ECUs with poor compatibility with OBD2, resulting in incomplete diagnosis of all vehicle systems.

Hardware interface level

There are differences in interface standards: although J1939 and OBD2 have standard interface definitions, different vehicle manufacturers may have special designs for the interfaces.

Electrical characteristics need to be matched: there are differences in electrical characteristics such as voltage, current, impedance, etc. between J1939 and OBD2 interfaces. If the conversion cable cannot match these electrical characteristics well, it can lead to signal distortion, transmission errors, or equipment damage.

When using J1939 to OBD2 cables, a comprehensive evaluation and testing should be conducted based on the specific vehicle model, diagnostic requirements, and equipment compatibility to ensure that they can function properly and meet diagnostic requirements.
